First Date in Soho: 3 Levels of Ambition

Soho is London's most concentrated square mile of good taste, bad decisions, and excellent drinks. Whether you're playing it safe or going all-in, here's how to make a first impression that sticks.

1
7:00 PM

Bar Termini

Tiny, candlelit, Italian-inspired. The negroni here is perfect and the space is intimate without being claustrophobic. It says "I know a place" without trying too hard. Maximum two drinks — you're warming up, not peaking.

💡 It's small. If it's full, Duck & Dry's basement cocktail bar is 2 minutes away.
2
8:00 PM — Level 1: Safe

Blacklock Soho

Basement chophouse, sharing plates, £5 cocktails to start. The "all in" sharing platter breaks the ice because you're both reaching for meat with your hands. Casual, loud enough to cover silences, cheap enough to insist on paying.

💡 The pre-dinner cocktail is £5 and better than it has any right to be. Order two immediately.
3
8:00 PM — Level 2: Bold

BAO Soho

The iconic bun shop where the queue IS the foreplay. Standing outside together, deciding what to order, creates a shared experience before you've even sat down. Small plates = lots of "try this" moments. Intimate without being intense.

💡 If the Soho queue is brutal, pivot to the Fitzrovia location — it takes bookings.
4
8:00 PM — Level 3: All-In

The Palomar

Sit at the counter. Watch the chefs. Share everything. Jerusalem-meets-Soho cooking that's loud, theatrical, and gives you something to talk about even if conversation stalls. Counter seats are first-come — arrive at 8 sharp.

💡 Counter seats only. The dining room is fine, but the counter is where the magic happens.
5
10:00 PM

Cahoots

End the night in a converted 1940s tube station. Cocktails in teacups, swing music, and just enough theatrical absurdity to make the evening memorable. If things are going well, stay for the swing dancing. If they're going really well, the late-night menu runs until 1am.

💡 Book a booth in the main station. The Tickets Hall upstairs is less atmospheric.
